Which Litter Is Best For My Cat? (Plus a Litter Giveaway!)

Q: Dear Nora,
I’m adopting a new cat this week and I couldn’t be happier to add her to our family. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a cat and, I have to admit, I’m overwhelmed by the litter options. I remember when my only choices were clumping and non-clumping. How do I choose between all the different ones? How do I know what’s best for my cat and family?

A: Litter has come a long way over the past several years, and the choices can indeed be overwhelming. It’s hard to know what your new cat will prefer once she gets home. Some cats are very adaptable and some are set in their ways. Paying attention to what kind of litter she has been using at the shelter can give you some clues about what she’ll dependably use in your home.

I really like the Selector Tool on the Tidy Cats website because it asks you a few simple questions about your home and lifestyle (Do you have one cat or more? Do you prefer to scoop every day or change the litter once a week? Stuff like that), then it’ll show you which type of litter is best suited to your specific situation. Give it a try!

In fact, all Dear Nora readers should give it a try and comment to let me know what it tells you. We’ll send five free product coupons to THREE lucky readers so you can choose whatever litter works best for you and your cat. We’ll choose the three winners on Thursday December 3rd, so hurry up!

I tried the Selector Tool on the Tidy Cats website and it told me to use the following:
    4-in-1 STRENGTH
BECAUSE EXTRA ODOR CONTROL TOPS YOUR LIST EVERY TIME.

The Selector Tool was easy to use, I am glad you suggested I give it a try. Thank you,
    Joanne

Awesome! Yes, I love how easy to use too– and kinda fun even! Odor control is definitely important.

NON-CLUMPING 24/7 PERFORMANCE was suggested by Tidy Cat. I currently use crystal litter for the same reason I would use the NC24/7P litter so I think I’ll give it a try and see if the odor control works out for me. I really want to stay away from clumping because when that stuff’s on the floor and gets wet–woowee slippery.

Ooh good point! My litter box is in a spot where there is no wetness, but that’s an important safety factor to consider!

I used the litter selector and it suggested that I use Yesterday’s News original formula. I’ve always been curious about that litter so I may give it a try.

Nice! You must have chosen that “green” litters are important to you.

I used the litter selector and it said I should try Tidy Cats Pure Nature, which is a cedar, pine and corn clumping litter. It suggested this because I said Green products were important to me. I think I’ll give it a try!

Ooh I didn’t even know a blend like that existed. I guess you really do learn something new every day! 🙂

    TIDY SUGGESTS:
    PURE NATURE
BECAUSE YOU LOVE THE EARTH AS MUCH AS YOU LOVE YOUR CAT.

Never heard of it, but it doesn’t seem to have very good reviews. 3/5 on petco’s site for example. Some people love it, others complain about dust.

The selector recommended 4-1 litter which should be good for my household of 3 cats. It’s also a clumping litter which I like, so I’ll give it a try.
